NFCYM

Dearest Catholics (cardinals, archbishops, bishops, priests, other religious, pro-life individuals, youth ministry directors, and laity)

We have developed this page to encourage you to not only look at the overwhelming evidence we have found but to conduct your own personal research regarding whether or not you should continue your association with the Girl Scouts.  We are asking this because the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry (NFCYM) and the National Catholic Committee for Girl Scouts and Camp Fire (NCCGSCF) both have a “practice as an organization to investigate such matters by going directly to and contacting GSUSA” as stated in the January 28, 2011 Position Statement.  We find this “practice” alarming and perplexing because the Girl Scouts is a voting member of the NCCGSCF, and the NCCGSCF is on the Board of Directors and a part of the management team of NFCYM.  Please see the NCCGSCF history and structure documents for proof of this relationship.
The hierarchies of the NFCYM and NCCGSCF are so intricately entwined with Girl Scouts that we question their ability to be impartial in matters involving Girl Scouts.  Due to these existing relationships we humbly implore you to not be satisfied with either of these “Position Statements” from the NFCYM or NCCGSCF; please consider utilizing all the encompassing “matters and issues” in the decision as to whether or not your flock, that you shepherd, or your family, that you love and protect, should continue to be actively involved with the Girl Scouts nationally or locally.
We pray that the Holy Spirit will guide you in your own personal investigations,

Parents for Life

Recent investigations show concerns about the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry (NFCYM), including information on the NFCYM’s own website that link Catholics to pro-abortion organizations.  In addition, a book authored by the NFCYM’s Executive Director, Bob McCarty, provides problematic recommendations to pro-abortion websites.
We are concerned that many Catholic dioceses in the U.S. use the NFCYM/NCCGSCF’s “Position Statements” (2005, 2011 and the new February, 2012 Position Statement) in defending the Girl Scouts.  When parents, priests, parishes, and dioceses want to know if the Girl Scouts support contraception, teen sex, or abortion (or partner with organizations that do), they ask the NFCYM or its subsidiary, the National Catholic Committee on Girl Scouts and Camp Fire (NCCGSCF).  Although the NFCYM has never conducted or commissioned a rigorous, independent investigation of the Girl Scouts, it consistently picks up its Girl Scout megaphone and shouts, “Not true!” it reports Girl Scouts’ denials as fact.
Please see the following articles proving that there are in fact many concerns with the NFCYM as well as with the NFCYM’s Executive Director, Bob McCarty.
NFCYM: National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry: “The NFCYM does not seem to take fidelity to the teachings of the Church into account when choosing with whom to associate itself.  From featuring dissidents as speakers (Call to Action etc. …) at their conferences, to recommending unfaithful resources”.  Review by Catholic Culture
NFCYM’s Executive Director Robert McCarty has made some very questionable statements : According to McCarty, “As much as the church doesn’t want to admit it, part of this is theology. Kids don’t want a celibate lifestyle, and studies show our young people are being supported in this by their parents.”  Article by Catholic Culture
Engaging, keeping new Catholic generations : Bob McCarty is quoted in this article about the Catholic Youth.  Why is being tolerant of a sexual diverse lifestyle a “plus”?

Without 800,000/700,000 Catholic Girl Scouts, GSUSA would not financially survive.  They need our church to endorse them.  They will do anything (lie, erase history by scrubbing websites, deny) to keep Catholic Girl Scout members.  If the Catholic Church officially severs ties with GSUSA … many other churches will quickly follow … and GSUSA knows this. Catholic Ministry under Fire over Girl Scouts’ Pro- Abortion Ties : “The NFCYM, which connects some 700,000 Catholic Scout members with the Church and provides Catholic materials ….” Whistleblowers Want Faith Community to Fight ‘Evil Agenda’ : “McCarty told WND that no one knows for sure, but he estimates 800,000 U.S. Girl Scouts are Catholic.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Words/phrases that are printed “black, bold and italicized” are quoted directly from the May, 2005 or January, 2011 Position Statements
1Q:  Why does the NFCYM and the NCCGSCF both have a “practice as an organization to investigate such matters by going directly to and contacting GSUSA” and asking if these “matters and issues” truly happened?

A:  We cannot really answer the question of why the NFCYM and the NCCGSCF have a protocol of going directly to the GSUSA for answers to the grievous concerns of Catholics across this country, but we do know that this practice of conducting an investigation is seriously problematic.  If we had to investigate a robbery, we would not ask the robber if he robbed the bank. We would look for and analyze finger prints.  We would go into his home and explore deep into his closet and sock drawer for incriminating evidence.  So, we humbly challenge you to dig deep into the closet and sock drawers of the Girl Scouts of USA.  Search, scrutinize, and study the GSUSA’s websites, books, and other materials.  Research the websites that GSUSA encourages our girls to patronage, research the individuals GSUSA features in their books (Journey series) as women to emulate, and most of all pray to the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth to you.

2Q:  Why do these “Catholic” organizations (NFCYM/NCCGSCF) advise the laity to go directly to their local Girl Scout council for answers to these “matters and issues”?

A:  same answer as above.

3Q:  Why do our “Catholic” organizations (NFCYM/ NCCGSCS) continue to accept and “share the GSUSA responses” as truth?

A:  The “significant history” of this “formal plan of cooperation” with GSUSA should not be the reason why the NFCYM and NCCGSCF “continue building and strengthening the relationship” with GSUSA but this is what is stated in their Position Statement. .  We are extremely concerned with the recent history of this “formal relationship” with the GSUSA and the NFCYM’s “need to stay connected to GSUSA”.  “One does not have a formal plan of cooperation with the fox as to how to protect the hens in the henhouse.”

4Q:  What about “the specific concern that has been raised about Planned Parenthood and the public perception that GSUSA has a formal relationship with Planned Parenthood” as stated in the May, 2005 Position Statement?  (click here for a copy of the statement)

A:  The January, 2011 “Position Statement” declares “this statement reinforces our 2005 Plan of Cooperation” in which GSUSA “denies any formal relationship with Planned Parenthood.”  We here at Parents for Life ask you to please consider removing the word “formal” from the testimonial letter written by the CEO of the GSUSA, Kathy Cloninger, and then have her readdress the issue with “an official statement clarifying ‘any kind of’ relationship with Planned Parenthood.”  Because … in March of 2004 this still current CEO of GSUSA, Kathy Cloninger, on the Today Show stated that “We have relationships with our church communities, with YWCAs, and with Planned Parenthood organizations across the country.” Click here for a copy of the Today Show transcript and the video clip:

Kathy CloningerVideo Clip of the Today Show (32 seconds long) “We partner with many organizations.  We have relationships with our church communities, with YWCAs, and with Planned Parenthood organizations across the country, to bring information-based sex education programs to girls.”  Girl Scout CEO Kathy Cloninger in a 2004 interview on The Today Show.

In May, 2005 the NFCYM/NCCGSCF released a “Position Statement” in which they requested GSUSA to provide written clarification of the Planned Parenthood issue.  In this statement, Ms. Cloninger, denied a “formal relationship with Planned Parenthood”.  The updated January, 2011 “Position Statement” conveys, “Many Catholic Girl Scout leaders are feeling torn between their commitment to Girl Scouting and their commitment to their Catholic teachings.”  Now that you know the truth, we hope and pray that you do the right thing before God and choose your Catholic faith.

5Q:  The NFCYM stated in the January, 2011 Position Statement, “NFCYM can only influence secular organizations by staying in relationship with them … by being at the table.” What is wrong with this philosophy?

A:  One of our U.S. bishops wrote in August of 2010:  “We cannot collaborate with evil without gradually becoming evil ourselves.  We live in a time when the Church is called to be a believing community of resistance.  We need to call things by their true names.  We need to fight the evils we see.  And most importantly, we must not delude ourselves into thinking that by going along with the voices of secularism we can somehow mitigate or change things.”

6Q:  What about all the great and wonderful things Girl Scouts do for young girls, their families and the community?

A:  Our Catholic faith teaches, “Evil as a means to achieve good is not to be justified” (CCC 1756, CCC 1761, CCC 1789).  We as the Church (religious and laity) cannot continue to “justify” or make up excuses for the existence of the GSUSA within our Holy Church.  The Catholic Church containing the fullness of the truth is to illuminate out its light into the secular world but not have the secular world “illuminating” its partial truths into the Catholic Church.

7Q:  How is WAGGGS connected to GSUSA?  How does this connection affect my daughter at the local council level?

A:  Please refer to our WAGGGS page for a detailed/complete answer to these two questions.

8Q:  When searching the NCCGSCF “Frequently Asked Questions” page why does this Catholic committee down play the seriousness of its “connection” with Planned Parenthood because “the only connection is when a troop … and Planned Parenthood may be the only resource listed”?  See below the question and answer from NCCGSCF’s website:
“Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. nationally and locally supports Planned Parenthood.”
This is not true. People assume that but the only connection is when a troop is looking for a resource for something in one of the badge programs and Planned Parenthood may be the only one listed.”

9Q:  Why would any entity that the Catholic Church supports accept “resources” from a known abortion provider?  To search the NCCGSCF FAQ’s page please click on this link.
10Q:  Why is it acceptable for the NCCGSCF to be so vague in answering this question?
11Q:  “when a troop is looking for a resource” … What resource?
12Q:  “for something” … What does the NCCGSCF mean by the word “something”?
13Q:  “in one of the badge programs” … What badge?  What Girl Scout age/group level?

14Q:  Who is the person of contact for this issue at the NFCYM?

A:  We highly suggest that you respectfully and lovingly contact everyone on the following lists provided, to ask these questions and any others that you may have – NFCYM Staff NFCYM Board

15Q:  Who is the person of contact for this issue at the NCCGSGF?
A:  We highly suggest that you respectively and lovingly contact everyone on this list, to ask these questions and any others that you may have.

16Q:  Who is the person of contact for this issue at the LMFLY (Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth)?

A:  Please prayerfully discern for yourself

19Q: What is the NCCGSCGF and what is the purpose of this Catholic committee?
A:  Please refer to the NCCGSCF’s Mission Statement

Below are questions that we here at Parents for Life are not at this time able to accurately/factually answer.  If you have verifiable documented information please contact us at info@girlscoutswhynot.com so we may be able to post the facts on this site.

20Q:  Does the NFCYM work “for our Catholic Youth” or for GSUSA?
21Q:  Does the NCCGSCF work “for our Catholic Youth” or for GSUSA?
22Q:  Who pays these individuals salaries?
23Q:  Would any of these individuals’ positions/jobs be eliminated if the Catholic Church decided to sever ties with GSUSA?
24Q:  What is the LMFLY (Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth) and what is the purpose of this Catholic committee?
25Q:  How does all of this hierarchy work within all of these groups and the USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops)?

We are so greatly saddened that the NFCYM and the NCCGSCF have gained approval and creditability from our dioceses, parishes, and Catholic schools.  We are very troubled with the collaborated relationship of the NFCYM/NCCGSCF with the GSUSA.  We are extremely concerned with the omission of certain factual information about GSUSA and WAGGGS and their relationship with Planned Parenthood and other abortion advocacy entities.  We are disturbed that the NFCYM and NCCGSCF continue to “collaborate, engage, and dialog” with the GSUSA as this permits for diversion and deflection in their statements which are accepted as truth.  Our bishops, priests, and families have been led astray.  The collaboration between GSUSA and NFCYM/NCCGSCF is inherently wrong and ties with GSUSA should be severed.  The truth encompassing all the facts should be known, so that the Catholic Church can make an informed decision.
26Q.  What about Girl Scouts at the local level – my Girl Scout troop?
When people mention that Girl Scouts of the USA partners with Planned Parenthood, they are usually met with opposition and ambivalence.  People usually respond that “their local Girl Scout council has local control and they really have no relationship with Girl Scouts of the USA … so it’s okay to participate in Girl Scout programs at their Catholic parish or school.”   See our Girl Scout Resources page for additional information
